Reapers of Blood - The Thrist

The Thirst

Before I begin a description of what the Thirst is and feels like I'd like to take the time to stress this very important point to all Vampyres that are pondering this. "Trying to kick the habit" (stop drinking blood) and its consequences (why its a stupid idea). Every Vampyre has a drive inside them that requires them to feed upon blood or pranic energy. A psy Vampyre has the advantage that even if they choose not to feed they can/will involuntarily pull energy from those around them. A sanguinarian obviously cannot take blood from those around them without those people knowing. If a Vampyre, for whatever reason decides to go with out blood (or be normal because they have been convinced/have convinced themselves that what they do is wrong) it will have some very drastic results. The withdrawal effects vary from Vampyre to Vampyre and can be anything as mild as head aches, weakness, restlessness to vomiting, pain in various parts of the body, double vision, passing out, low blood count, neurological symptoms, and a whole range of things that will result in you ending up in the hospital. And they will run a variety of tests on you and not be able to determine what is wrong with you. But inside you will know. You need to feed. Besides all of this, you cannot deny the beast with in. It will make you a very dangerous person to be around. If you are around some one who accidentally cuts themselves your Vampyre side will surface, seize control of you and you'll practically tear the person apart trying to get at the blood. These symptoms will occur until you feed again. Nothing else will make them go away. Do not let it come to that. You cannot go against your nature once it has been awakened. Besides, you should feel privileged that you are what you are. Granted there are downsides, and the thirst can be torturous at times, but all upsides have downsides, there must be a balance. Make yourself worthy of your nature. I stress this to you not because I have experienced this first hand but because lately I have seen a disturbing number of posts to this effect on the web. At first I just thought that the few individuals who were attempting this were just stupid and weak, but I have come to a disturbing realization that this phenomenon is rather wide spread. DO NOT attempt this, if for nothing else for the sake of your health.

This is really something that cannot be explained so much as experienced. Once you have felt The Thirst/The Hunger, you'll understand what I mean. But as a new Vampyre, figuring out how the Thirst/Hunger feels can be difficult. You can eat and eat, until your belly's full. But that hunger will still be there, burning torturously in your stomach until you finally can sate it with blood. In the beginning these feelings can be weak and hard to discern from your regular hunger and thirst, but as your need for blood increases so will the thirst/hunger. With time it will reach a point where you can tell with out a doubt that you hunger for blood and naught else. If you deny your hunger/thirst for too long it will bring out "The Beast". You'll become pretty moody, weak, listless, and violent, just to name a few. You may also experience anxiety and dizziness. You will have trouble concentrating, and possibly begin to feel a bit depressed. You begin to feel disconnected from the world around you, almost like you are watching a movie, everything begins to seem surreal. After a few days, some Vampyres will experience slipping in and out of "trances", and painful head aches. You may have a very hard time maintaining a continuous line of thought. Bright lights also start to get extremely painful. Some Vampyres even experience nausea after eating regular food. You'll lose control at the site of blood and if you have a significant other, you'll bite them, hard. Hard enough to draw blood in some cases, which is VERY uncomfortable for the receiving party. If you put off feeding long enough it can begin to effect your immune system and you will fall ill. So make it a point to feed regularly, if not only for yourself, then for your significant other as well.

There are ways to help you cope with the cravings of the thirst if you cannot get access to blood right away. However, these things should not be used as a substitute for blood. Ultimately, you must find a donor. Here are some things that others have found helpful: (Note: Not all of these things work for everyone. You must find what works for you. These are merely suggestions.)

herbal teas * milk * Pepsi * rare steaks * wines, preferably merlot * cranberry juice * meditation * yoga * orange juice * grape juice * v8 * v8 splashes * chocolate * protein rich foods, preferably meats

Another way to help curb your thirst and minimize the number of times you need to feed is to consciously suppress your energy every day. First sit calmly and feel your energy around you. Next pull it inside of yourself and visualize it filling a box or container inside of you. Next see the box or container closing so that nothing can escape. Do this every morning. This helps minimize the amount of energy you unconsciously throw off and helps hide your energy pattern and the power that you possess from others (i.e. Hunters, other Vampyres, witches, etc). Getting the proper foods and the right amount of sleep can also effect the thirst. If you aren't eating enough or eating healthy, or getting at least eight hours of sleep each night this can cause you to need to drink blood more often. Making a conscious effort to eat right and get a good night's sleep will help reduce the thirst. You don't have to be a health freak or anything but you should at least make the attempt to eat properly. This will also help you avoid getting sick, which can cause your thirst to increase as well because your body will devote more of its resources to fight off the illness.

If you are really in a jam you can drink your own blood, but it will only hold you about a month and should not be repeated, or used as a way of fighting your cravings permanently. Ultimately the bottom line is that you must find a donor, unless you can successfully learn to psi-feed.

Many Vampyre help sites out there recommend going to the butcher and obtaining blood. DO NOT use uncooked animal blood to deal with your thirst. While it may seem like a good idea it only invites danger. First of all I'd like to point out something that many Vampyres seem to not be taking into account when they drink animal blood: the blood you obtain from the butcher is dead blood, so it doesn't contain the same amount of energy that living blood does. Death rips most of the energy from the body when it occurs, leaving very little behind. It's a very inefficient means of feeding, on top of all of the risk factors. This means you have ingest more animal blood than human blood if you chose this method, which only increases the risk. Secondly animal blood, especially pig's blood is dirty. Animals carry many diseases in their blood. How can you test the blood to be sure it's safe? I suppose you can assume that since the animal lived long enough to be butchered that it was of reasonable good health, but doesn't that seem a bit risky? Here's another reason that was in the news not that long ago: "If you drink infected cow's blood you stand a chance of getting mad cow disease, but now they have been doing research on primates, and it does pass from primate to primate as well through either direct injection to the brain or from being injected into the blood stream." Also demons can easily possess animals. Animals do not have judgment or higher learning and are possessed a lot easier then humans. Because we possess thinking and higher learning it is more of a challenge for demons to attempt to possess us. If you drink the blood of an animal that has been possessed that demon may then also possess you with ease. It opens the door for them to walk right in, as if you have invited them. Cooked animal blood (like from a steak) is ok to consume because the heating process makes the demon uncomfortable and causes it to leave. Demons don't like heat, in fact they hate it. So you are probably thinking "Well I can still go to the butcher, get animal's blood and so long as I heat it before I ingest it I should be fine, right? Wrong. While heating the blood does minimize the risk of getting a disease from the blood it unfortunately breaks down the blood. You can use it to curb the thirst temporarily until you can get the real thing from a donor, but other than that it's pretty useless. Heated animal blood is half as effective as raw animal blood, and that’s being generous. This means that you have to drink even more of it to attempt to equal what you would have gotten from feeding from a donor.
As your powers continue to develop so will your thirst for blood, so make it a point to have access to several donors, not just one. You don't want to overly drain one donor because your thirst has increased. This can weaken your donor/vessel and cause them to get sick, making so that you cannot feed from them until they are well. Having several donors/vessels is just a wise idea.
